Screw Piles vs Concrete: An Honest Cost Comparison

Nearly every article weighing screw piles against concrete was written by a company selling one or the other, and this one is no exception: screw pile foundations are our core business. What we’ll add is the section most sellers skip, namely the jobs where concrete is the smarter pick.

Are screw piles cheaper than concrete?

Compare materials only and concrete usually comes out ahead. Some bagged mix and a cardboard form are cheaper than steel pipe with a helix welded onto it.

But materials aren’t what ends up on the invoice.

Pouring a pile starts with digging. Digging means an excavator or plenty of hand labour, and the soil that comes out has to be hauled away. Then come the forms, and then the wait while the concrete cures, commonly several days and more in cold weather. When the pour lands on a Tuesday and the framing crew is booked for Thursday, somebody absorbs that cost.

A helical screw pile shows up as finished steel, is driven by machine and can take load that same day. Nothing to dig, nothing to haul off, nothing to wait for.

Put labour, equipment hours, disposal and scheduling into the math and, on small to mid-size residential projects, the totals tend to end up near each other. Screw piles frequently pull ahead when access is tight or the timeline is short.

Where concrete genuinely wins

In fairness, there are three situations:

Very large pile counts on open sites. Dozens of piles on a broad, level property with room for a ready-mix truck can tip the per-pile cost toward concrete.

Shallow bedrock. When solid rock sits near the surface, a screw pile has no room to do its job, and occasionally a completely different foundation is called for.

Where a continuous footing is the right structural answer. Piles support loads at points. Certain structures need bearing along their whole length, and pushing piles into that role is a poor fit wearing a modern label.

Where screw piles win

Tight access. Think of a fenced yard, an infill lot in the inner city or a deck added beside an existing home. Compact rigs fit where an excavator and a concrete truck won’t.

Winter. Concrete work halts once the ground freezes; screw pile installation keeps going. Calgary spends a good part of the year in that state.

Schedule. Framing can start the day the piles go in. Cutting several days of cure time out of a deck or garage project is often worth more than the gap in material cost.

Verified capacity. Most people overlook this one. Each helical pile’s installation torque is measured as it goes down, and torque correlates with bearing capacity, so you end up with a figure for every pile showing it meets its design load. Poured piles get checked before the concrete goes in and are then covered up; you rely on the process instead of a measured result.

Frost heave on reactive clay. Calgary clay swells and shrinks as moisture changes. A pile anchored under that active layer stays put while the soil above it moves.

What about the disadvantages?

Screw piles do have drawbacks, and any comparison claiming they don’t isn’t worth your time. Cobbles and shallow bedrock can halt a pile before it reaches depth. A pile without sound engineering behind it is of little value. And when an open site calls for a very high pile count, the cost edge can shrink to nothing.

How to compare two quotes properly

With a concrete quote and a screw pile quote side by side, confirm each one accounts for:

• Digging and hauling away spoil, where that applies
• Engineering and stamped drawings, if the permit asks for them
• Time lost to curing, which is a genuine cost
• Proof of performance: how will you know the foundation holds its load?

If one quote omits disposal and the other omits engineering, the totals can’t be compared, no matter how close they look.
