A screw pile estimate rises or falls on six variables. Ask any installer which ones apply to your lot; a vague answer tells you something.
Shaft size and number of helices
The steel under a deck is not the steel under a grade beam. A heavier shaft or extra helix raises the cost of each screw pile, but usually means fewer of them.
How deep firm soil sits
There is no set depth — a pile keeps going until the torque reading confirms capacity. Where solid bearing turns up shallow, the job costs less than where it sits further down.
What the ground is made of
Calgary clay behaves one way, the glacial till and cobbles around Cochrane another, and the river-valley alluvium south of the city another again. Cobble and till typically call for heavier steel and more torque.
Getting equipment in
A tracked machine suits an open lot. Fenced backyards, narrow inner-city properties and indoor work mean compact or handheld gear, and that takes longer.
Whether engineering is needed
For some permits, drawings and load calculations must carry the stamp of an APEGA-licensed P.Eng.; for others they need not. You find out which applies before agreeing to anything.

Cost Comparison: Screw Piles or Poured Concrete
Compare material invoices only and poured concrete piles frequently come out ahead. The trouble is what that comparison ignores.
Poured concrete starts with digging: an excavator crossing the yard, forms to build, and a heap of soil that must be hauled off. After the pour comes curing, commonly a matter of days before framing can start and more when temperatures drop. A screw pile foundation, by contrast, can take load on installation day, with no open hole left behind.
Concrete usually earns its place on big, open sites needing a large number of piles and offering easy access. Screw piles pull ahead on cramped lots, during winter, on small and mid-sized projects, and wherever waiting on a cure would hold up the trades behind you.

Projects That Can Skip Screw Piles
A freestanding deck built low to the ground, not tied into the house, may not need engineered piles of any kind. A small shed is often perfectly happy on skids or a compacted gravel pad. And where bedrock sits near the surface, a different foundation type can be the more sensible call.
